Tom was an educator for 30 years and served the residents of Brevard County as the Area I Superintendent since 2003. He was responsible for the administration and supervision of 24 schools and more than 22,000 students in South Brevard.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Tom came to Brevard in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary; and his 3 sons, Sean, Eric, and Patrick.
Tom and Mary moved to Melbourne Village in 1988 and serviced on the Recreation Committee. Tom was on the Recreation Committee when the original playground was planned and installed in the late 80's.
Alex was an AHF Member since 1994. He was retired from Control Data Corp. and then retired again from the US Postal Service in Minneapolis. Before coming to the Village he was a stock car racer. He continued his love of old cars here by restoring old vehicles including a Buick Skylark and a Crosley in a garage on the back of his property. He also volunteered with parks and paths on workdays when he was able. He is survived by AHF Members and former residents of Ward Parkway, brother John and sister-in-law Kay Metcalf, now living in Indialantic.
Margaret and Bill Hames lived in the Village from 1970 to 2001. She gained an appreciation for the native plants and trees of Florida as one of Erna Nixon's 'students' soon after moving to Melbourne Village and learned how to use a taxonomic key from fellow plant enthusiast Bonnie Arbuckle. While she considered herself an amateur botanist, Margaret was an inexhaustible source of plant species knowledge for anyone who accompanied her on trips into field and forest.
Margaret, along with Villagers Hester Wagner and June Golder, founded the Contradina (South Brevard) chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.
Jay Wagner died on August 2, 2009. He was an AHF member since 1956. He sold his home at 6885 Ward Parkway in May 2009. Jay created all the beautiful signs that grace our parks and historic spots, including the original wooden cardinals. he also spent many hours volunteering for the AHF.
Ann lived in the Village since 1999 and was an AHF Member. She was born in New York City, work for the International Jewelry Workers' Union, and was an animal advocate. She enjoyed walking her dog, Heidi and oil painting. She loved living in the Village, especially the peace and the animals. Her daughter, Lynn Miraglia lives on Ibis Court.
Albert, AHF Member since1971, was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and graduated from Fort Schuyler Maritime College in New York. He served his country as a Merchant Marine during World War II. He moved to Florida in 1963 and worked for Pan Am for 20 years. He served the Town of Melbourne Village for over six years as Mayor and Town Superintendent. He was active in community theater and was an avid woodcarver. There was a memorial service in his honor on September 20th 2009 in the Village Hall.
Mary Beasom Crane Road Feb 17, 1940 - Dec 14, 2007
Mary was born in Arlington Heights, Ill and moved to Melbourne in 1974 where she met and married Jim Beasom (Crane Rd) in 1985. Mary has two sons and 11 grandchildren.
Mary had many interests. She did graphics art for several businesses. She started and ran a video business and an antique furniture restoration business. She was very active in a number of civic and professional groups including Ad Fed, APPA and Keep Brevard Beautiful.
Mary served the Town of Melbourne Village in many ways. She served on and chaired the Planning & Zoning Board, was a Town Commissioner for 12 years including 6 years as vice mayor. She was involved in many of the big projects in Melbourne Village including the construction of the Town office building, the Platt Circle drainage project and the restoration of the Hester Wagner Community House, where she acted as general contractor by planning the work and working everyday with volunteers she recruited and with contractors to complete the project on budget. She also was acting supervisor for the public works department for several years saving the Town thousands of dollars.
James D. Fraser was born in Glen Holme, Nova Scotia, Canada. He came to Florida in 1963 and was a machine shop supervisor. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Kline Fraser of Melbourne Village, 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Fraser and a son George Fraser. Services were held in Deerhead Hammock in Melbourne Village.
