April 22, 2007 - Founder's Day
Founder's Day 2007 - 50th Anniversary Celebration!
Apr 22
- One of the favorite events each year in Melbourne Village is the
Founder's Day celebration which started off on Founder's Day Eve with a
standing-room-only crowd for an Ice Cream Social at the Hester Wagner
Community House. An encore presentation of Debbie Seiler's slideshow, "A Year In The Life Of Melbourne Village" was shown, and then some long-time Village residents told stories that had
everyone laughing out loud and longing for the old days.
The
next day started off with a bang as 89 entrants ran through the
streets, parks, and paths of the Village in the "Fun Run" foot race held
each year as part of the Founder's Day festivities. Around noon the
crowds started to gather - perhaps drawn out of their homes by the
scent of the meat cooking or the sound of the band tuning up - but out
they came, ready to soak up the perfect sunny, breezy day under the
giant oaks around the AHF Hall. Dick Bustelo's band entertained for
hours rocking out songs by The Eagles, Steely Dan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and
others.
The roast pig and chicken feast was succulent and
everyone enjoyed the delicious pot luck side dishes and desserts, hot
dogs, popcorn, beer, soda, lemonade, iced tea, the tractor race,
softball game, face painting, balloon twisting, moonwalk tent and
obstacle course for kids, the historical display, avenue of toys,
special commemorative pins and T-shirts, and of course the fun and
fellowship that comes with getting together with your friends and
neighbors. It's always great to see some old faces, meet some new ones,
and to get to know a little more about someone you wave to every day.
All
of the food and activities were served up with a smile by a hardworking
team of villagers who volunteered to coordinate the festivities. A
great big thank you to all of you for your time and effort in making
this weekend unforgettable.
